Learn All About The Common Admission Test (CAT)

If you are looking forward to take the national level entrance examination of CAT, it is important you know all about the exam dates, syllabus, and how you can apply for the exam. CAT is held all over India and the candidates are granted admission into various management programmes based on their CAT scores. More than 100 B-schools accept the CAT scores and more than two lakh candidates sat for the exam last year.

The exam is always conducted in the online mode and is normally held in the first week of December. The notifications are sent out in the month of July or August, after which the online application is available. Apart from the CAT syllabus¸ it is also important to know the exam pattern.

The CAT exam has four sections, where there would be 100 questions, both MCQs and non-MCQs. The four sections are as follows: 

  • Verbal Ability
  • Reading Comprehension
  • Data Interpretation
  • Logical Reasoning

The Eligibility Criteria

The exam of CAT is known to be the toughest entrance exams in the country. Though it is tough, lakhs of students take the exam with the hopes of getting admission into the best B-schools in India.

To apply for the exam, a candidate needs to be a graduate and have 50% aggregate or CGPA equivalent. There is a relaxation of 5% for scheduled caste, scheduled tribe and people with disabilities.

Candidates, who are appearing for the final year of their graduation, can also apply for the online entrance test.

How to Apply for CAT?

The CAT application has to be filled online and the candidates have to fill the application within 30 minutes. Though you can re-login into the portal and refill the missed details, you need to remember that every login session is valid merely for 30 minutes.

Here is a step-wise guide on how to fill out your CAT application:

  • Candidates can apply for the CAT exam by visiting the official website of CAT. You can click on the application option and start filling the required details.
  • This will usually result in creating a user profile so that you can get the user ID and password to fill out the in-depth application.
  • You will receive the user ID by email and password in a text message. Use those credentials to log on and begin the formal application process.
  • Fill in the application with care as you will be unable to change any detail after submission.
  • Once done, you will be asked to pay the application fee using one of the available payment methods.

Syllabus for CAT

Let us now have a look at the CAT syllabus. As mentioned earlier, CAT exam has four sections. These are as follows:

Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension: This section consists of verbal reasoning, antonyms, fill in the blanks, synonyms, idioms and so on. You will also have a reading comprehension.

Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning: This section will have data interpretation and analysis, and this is based on tables, text, graphics and pi charts. You will also have Venn diagrams, clocks, seating arrangement, linear and matrix arrangement, and so on.

Quantitative Ability: This is one of the most important and the hardest sections in CAT, according to students and experts. You will have questions from number systems, probability, algebra, time, geometry and trigonometry and much more.
