“The trouble with retirement is that you never get a day off.” – Abe Lemons
What is the purpose of retirement?
What are you going to do for fun after retirement? Do you want to buy a caravan and go on a trip? Do you want to start a part-time job?
In today’s’ society, the number of American retirees are growing day by day. Many of them couldn’t think of something that can keep them busy, where the rest of them might miss the fun of their past work life and the sense of purpose.
As per the USA Today, “About one out of every four 65-year-olds today will live past age 90, and one out of 10 will live past age 95.” So, if you again start working after retirement, you may earn money for 20 years or more. It is quite fascinating and exciting too.
Whatever the situation is, if you again use your mind at work, it’ll be the best way to feel healthy and vibrant for the rest of your life. Working after retirement brings you financial and mental peace.
Here are a few top reasons why you should work after getting retired.
1. Working keeps you stay healthy
Exercise, reading, music, indoor games like chess, crossword puzzles, sudoku, etc may provide the stimulus and keeps you fit mentally and physically. But working is also an excellent way to keep yourself fit.
If you keep yourself active both mentally and physically, it could help you feel much younger and energetic. The University of Oregon revealed that working after age 65 may add more years to your life. Keep working and be active socially to avoid mental stress, anxiety, and other mental health issues. Working in your late 60’s or after retirement may keep your immune from age-related diseases like dementia.
2. It would provide financial stability
Like most of the retired people, you might have good retirement savings/income from your retirement plan. The fund could help you to meet the basic expenses. But you’ll also need to face inflation, long-term care, and rising medical costs. Apart from that, what about your entertainment and fun? Are you going to sacrifice them even after your retirement?
As per a Gallup News survey, only 24% of Americans are confident enough that they can survive after retirement with such a limited income.
So, working after retirement can help you to earn a decent amount and keep your savings intact. Many retired people start getting training for new jobs, which they can enjoy. You don’t have to return to your old job. You can use your skills such as music, writing, painting, and your other hobbies to earn extra cash. You may start a new business, or start a cooking school, teach people how to maintain a garden, or teach swimming, and lots and lots of other things.
The more money you get, it’ll get easier for you to pay for your daily expenses, and pay off your debts. If you got enough funds in your hands, opt for a 0% balance transfer card and consolidate all credit cards into one. Make sure you pay the entire balance before the offer period ends.
3. You can delay the social security benefits
The longer you wait to receive Social Security benefits, the bigger your benefits will become when you reach your full retirement age (65 or 67). Keep working and don’t receive your Social Security checks. You’ll be able to grab bigger monthly payments for the rest of your life.
If you retire and start receiving benefits before you reach full retirement age (as per the Social Security Administration), your Social Security benefits could be lowered by as much as 30%.
Similarly, if you do not tap into your 401k or IRA, you’ll be giving those accounts more time to grow. Finally, you can get a bigger nest egg ready when start withdrawing money from those accounts.
4. You’ll be eligible for health insurance benefits
You’ll not receive Medicare coverage until you reach the age of 65. So, for many retired persons, the medical cost can be quite shocking if they are no longer part of a company medical plan.
So, if you have retired from your former job before the age of 65, you may opt for another job with health benefits to cover the gap.
Also, even if you receive Medicare benefits, few healthcare-related expenses may create stress in your life, such as prescription drug expenses.
So, once you have health insurance through your company, you must use both your health insurance and Medicare’s coverage to save thousands of dollars a year in medical expenses.
5. It can keep your relationships healthy
It is seen that after retirement, people are having a major change in their relationships. Sometimes, it also puts stress on their marriage.
It’s quite a common issue for seniors. Many of them may experience discomfort being in the house all the time and get annoyed with their relationships. Being “out of the game” they also feel discomfort in their lives and losses interest in family occasions or events that they formerly enjoyed.
If being a senior retiree, you can start working again, you’ll get back that old confidence in you. You’ll start earning again, start contributing and saving again like before.
